Medicare Supplements - What's Missing in Medicare parts A and B

While original medicare covers hospital stays and outpatient medical services, it leaves some significant gaps in your health coverage. Medicare (parts A and B) will pay 80% of doctor and hospital visits, leaving you to pay the remaining 20%. This could mean one expensive hospital visit could end up costing you thousands of dollars - with absolutely no limit to the amount you'd have to spend.

Aside from having no out-of-pocket limits, original medicare will not cover vision or dental benefits, nor will it cover prescription drug costs or hearing exams and hearing aids. Then there's the Part A deductible - expenses you are obligated to pay whenever you are admitted to a hospital as an inpatient - and the Part B deductible - amounts you must pay each year for medical expenses such as doctor visits before medicare begins paying. Having a medicare supplement policy can reimburse you the deductible amount.

Medicare pays for the first 20 days of care in a skilled nursing facility following hospitalization but requires you to pay a coinsurance beginning on day 21-day 100. A medicare supplement benefit would pay the coinsurance beginning on the 21st day.

Without a medicare supplement plan, you could be facing 'excess charges' when your doctor bills you the difference between what medicare covers and what the amount is they can legally charge you (called the "limiting charge"). A medicare supplement policy that covers "excess charges" will pay the full amount billed by your doctors and providers.

It makes sense to expand your coverage with Medicare Supplements. Without a medicare supplement plan, you could be responsible for thousands of dollars of uninsured costs. A supplement plan fills in the gaps for what traditional medicare doesn't offer, and can almost eliminate any additional out of pocked costs not covered by medicare.
